An objective on a resume should show focus. It should contain keywords
to get shortlisted for an interview. Customisation gives it an additional edge
in the job search.
A resume objective is like a headline to the rest of the resume. It lets the readers know what to expect from the resume. While some include the objective in the cover letter, many include it in the resume. For most of us, objectives feature in our resumes but no matter where we place it, an objective statement is important as it summarizes in a line what the resume is all about.
A job objective sets the tone for the rest of the resume. It is the employment goal. It should be a one liner stating specially the designation or profile we want from the company. Avoid meaningless statements like “Looking for a position to utilize my skills for company benefit.” Jannette Beamon of Dell Computers' Central Staffing Division in Round Rock, Texas says "I like to see an objective on a resume because it shows focus".
To write the perfect job objective we need to tailor it as per the applied job. Itshould contain the key words to get shortlisted among thousands of others. For example for a writer’s position, the key words would be writing, research, publication, proofreading etc. A customized objective depicts our awareness of employment goal and our familiarity to the field.
Boring Old Resume Objective vs. Branding Statement
BORING OLD OBJECTIVE:
Creative marketing professional seeks a position within an organization that will allow me to utilize my skills with the potential for growth.
ATTENTION-GRABBING BRANDING STATEMENT:
Forward-thinking marketing professional offering a unique combination of creativity and analytical skill with the ability to assess both vantage points simultaneously for an effective balance of visual nuance and sound business decisions which are easily transferable into a variety of positions.
However, we should avoid going overboard with the customization. Being too specific has a negative effect on our resume. Very specific statements do not work as it limits our chances during the search. It makes our resume bypass probable openings within a company. So while applying for a particular job, we can mention the position or the industry as per the job description of the company. Example: Looking for an assistant manager’s position in marketing in the entertainment industry. For general display in job portals just mention the job skills in the objective unless we want to target only a particular sector or job position. Example: Looking for a middle level managerial position in the marketing sector.
Sample Objective Statements
- Secure a position in a company to utilize my skills in project management, quality assurance, team management, vendor development.
- Seeking senior management position in human relations, project management, and staff recruitment and retention.
- Marketing trainee at xxx media organization.
- In search of an entry level position in accounting to make the most of xxxx course (educational background), and to work well with people
