The ISO 14001 is an International Standard for Environmental Management.
This Standard is based on Sustainable Development, which means “Taking care of our environment without compromising the needs of our future generation”, i.e. conservation of natural resources like energy, water, forest etc.

32.NHPC’S INITIATIVES FOR ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.
The Organizational set up for implementation of EMS and responsibilities of key Personnel are demarcated, appointed a MR, who is overall responsible for implementation of ISO 14001 in the organization
In each division DDC is appointed , who is overall responsible for implementation of ISO 14001 in that division
Promulgated an Environmental Policy to address the Environmental concern in Hydropower Development and It shall Endeavour to comply optimum utilization of natural resources and Motivate Employees for the cause of Environment.

Environmental Review was carried out to identify the activities that give rise to significant Environmental Impact during normal / abnormal working conditions and Emergency situations.
Based on the study of legislative requirements applicable to activities of Corporate Office, an “Environmental Aspect Register” has been prepared.
Establish some objectives targets which shall be consistent with the environmental policy including the commitment to prevention of pollution.
For achieving objectives, Environmental Management Programmes are established, includes responsibility for achieving these targets & mean time frame by which they are to be achieved.

Established a system for collection , storage, & Disposal of waste water generated in Corporate Office as per Initial Environmental Review
